Senior to Senior

Our Senior to Senior program is designed to provide senior companion animals to the elderly (60 or older), disabled, or shut-ins.

This program will be funded through donations and/or fundraisers designated specifically for Senior to Senior.

Eligibility consists of proof of:
*  Disability in the form of an award letter.
*  Age as proven by the driver's license or other accepted ID.
*  Shut-in by letter from a certified health care worker directly associated with the eligible party stating that the person is in fact confined to their home.

In order for a SECARE animal to qualify for this program, the animal must be five (5) years of age or older, be spayed or neutered, and have a calm or obedient disposition that would pre-dispose the animal as suitable for a therapy dog-type environment.  A younger animal may qualify if it has non-life-threatening health conditions that would make the animal less than suitable for an active home.

Participants in this program must agree:

1.  To allow the dog to live out its natural life in their home and care.
2.  Provide routine health care for the dog, such as vaccinations, teeth cleaning, parasite control and regular check ups with a vet of their choice and at their expense.
3.  Provide a canine-based diet as approved by their vet.
4.  Provide for mild, vet-approved exercise for the dog.
5.  Contact SECARE if the participant can no longer keep the dog.

It is the future goal of SECARE to be able to provide complete funding for these animals for their daily and routine health care for the life of the dog, so that it is not a burden on a household that is many times already overburdened financially.
